Masquerade

In your eyes dear mockery
Engaged me to a swift tune
Of words, and lightly laughing

We caught each other, to and fro
Telling a little more each time -
Somewhere the music changed

To a slow sonority
With a different memory
Rising for reparation.

We danced wildly, clutching at the old tune
But the evidence lay at our feet;
The thousand efforts withered as flowers.
